Nils Holgersson
Nils Holgersson was a Swedish boy who lived in the 19th Century.
He is the protagonist of The wonderful adventures of Nils written by Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940).
This fairy tale was written in 1906 in order to teach Swedish children the geography of their country in a pleasant way.
The wonderful adventures of Nils is a beautiful novel, a moralistic tale and a geography lesson which takes you across Sweden. Nils was a fourteen-year-old boy who lived in the South of Sweden. This boy was a real brat. But one day that he had bullied a Tomte ( a kind of Scandinavian goblin), he was punished and turned into a Tomte himself. He had become really little and started flying across Sweden with a herd of wild geese. That trip was a real adventure with good and bad times.
This novel was adapted into a cartoon a few years ago in France. This book will enable you to learn lots of interesting things about Sweden. It is published by Presses Pocket.
Selma Lagerlöf first job was a school teacher. She was a famous Swedish writer.
She was the first woman to win the Nobel prize of literature (in 1909).
She became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1914.
